The Royal District Nursing Service cares for more than 7000 people every day providing general nursing and specialised healthcare to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
Every year, the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda opens its doors to thousands of people who are homeless or living in desperate situations. Every day more than 600 people from all over Melbourne come to the Mission to share a hot meal, to seek assistance or to connect with others in a welcoming and safe community.
“Our focus is to make permanent changes to people’s lives and to reconnect them with the wider community. By encouraging active participation in mainstream skills training, volunteering opportunities and sport and recreational activities, people begin to feel socially included, gain more confidence and a sense of belonging. St Vincent de Paul Aged Care and Community Services provides professional welfare services to a range of disadvantaged people, including the homeless, the elderly and those with a disability. Last year more than 120 000 people received assistance.
The meals service at Ozanam Community Centre, North Melbourne, is a key part of these services. Not only is a nutritious meal provided to anyone who needs it, the service helps link meal participants to other support services at the centre from showers, laundry, clothing and blankets to medical clinics and mental health outreach services.
While the meals service receives some funding from the Government, philanthropic sources such as the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation play a vital role in assisting with the shortfall.
Noah’s Ark Inc understands that having a child with a disability is a life changing experience. “Funding from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation provides education to staff and community members so we can better resource families as they adapt over time, reprioritise for their child and, we hope, become hopeful”, said CEO John Forster.
